So, what is it that makes us turn away from the truth about our health and well being? I believe each of us has a certain level of denial that is active, some more than others. I'm sure all of us have known someone in our lifetime diagnosed with cancer but continues to smoke. How about the person who continues to stay in the same career or relationship in spite of their unhappiness in it. Do people vacillate from a state of love where they feel safe to a state of fear where they feel unsafe? Our fears and phobias are varied however one common fear amongst all of us is the fear of change. We all bury our heads in the sand to some degree because we're afraid to see the truth and afraid to change.
As a health coach I work with clients to begin identifying fears that keep them stuck. I also help them to begin to recognize how those fears are created via their own thinking in the moment. It is true that although no one can make an insight happen, we can foster an environment for insights to occur. For example, I ask my clients to do some written reflection on their own. A powerful way to allow insight to occur by creating space and stillness in the mind and allowing answers to surface - and then just write, don't judge what is coming out on paper. An insight is an "aha" moment that comes when we are relaxed in the mind. A revelation, if you will. Just one insight or "aha" moment creates gaps in the mental chatter that keeps us stuck. As we continue to have more insights, these gaps become greater and greater and we allow new thinking to emerge.
A book that I like to recommend clients who are working to move beyond fear-based patterns is by Joseph Bailey entitled, Fearproof Your Life. The book guides readers to a basic understanding of thought and how simple yet profound recognizing thought can be in dismantling old patterns. What better way to begin the new year than to feel empowered with insights in how to really make those changes you want and need to make?
