Over the years of working with clients for weight loss, it has become quite clear that emotions, whether it be boredom, stress, loneliness, anger, sadness, etc., set up powerful pulls to overeat the SSF (Salt, Sugar, Fat) foods. It’s not enough for the overeater to know this is true in order to stop the dysfunctional pattern. What is required by the body is an investigation of the underlying emotions. Without it, we surrender to our cravings, eating ourselves into some kind of altered state where we no longer feel the emotion(s).
In order to be a successful investigator, one must ask questions when the cravings begin before you find yourself in the kitchen looking through the refrigerator or cupboard. What am I feeling at this moment? What am I missing in my life that I’m using food to fill?
I once worked with a client, I’ll call her Carmen, who had no idea she was eating her emotions away until one day she had an insight. She was standing in the kitchen eating ice cream out of the tub. This was a regular pattern that had become normal when she was cooking dinner for her spouse. She had remembered my recommendation that she start asking herself questions, during times of cravings or eating SSF food. Before she even asked the questions that night in the kitchen, Carmen broke down and began to cry. Then she felt the anger. For years, she was the only one in the relationship who did the cooking. They both worked outside the home, they were both tired after work and yet the burden fell on her to cook all the meals. She now saw the tub of ice cream with clarity. It was her way of shoving down the feelings she did not want to face. Once Carmen realized what she was doing, knew she had to talk to her husband about this. The two of them were able to come to an understanding with an agreement that lessened Carmen’s load of cooking all the dinner meals after work. Carmen understood not only what drove that pattern with the ice cream but several other patterns of overeating that were related to what I call, underground emotions. Carmen is now on a life long journey, committed to living her life consciously and aware, not only with food choices but choices that nourish her spirit as well.
